Dead or Alive

Two things jumped out at me as I read through the first sentence of the book of Ephesians chapter two this morning: my previous life before becoming born again, and the 1980’s New Wave band Dead or Alive.

Although I won’t be writing about the latter, their namesake will stick to the title of this post ; )

So what is the big deal about Paul’s statement: “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins”?

There’s a lot to be said about his statement, but the main thing is that it reminds the Christian, especially if you once walked in the world, that we are to be compassionate and loving to those who do not know Jesus.

This is because while we, ourselves, were yet sinners Jesus died on the cross for us so that we may one day, willingly, give our lives to Him.

Before becoming born again, I was totally immersed in sin. I was an eighties New Wave fanatico with orange hair, piercing’s and the whole bit. All I wanted to do was party which got me into a lot of trouble. I also didn’t mind fighting or being an outward fool.

Later in life, the Lord mellowed me out after joining the Army National Guard. But, even though I was mellow on the outside, the inside was insanely dark and wicked. I still craved what the Bible calls foolishness.

When Jesus gave me life, at that very moment, I wanted to preach the Word (which I didn’t even know) and tell everyone about salvation; what I knew of it and that was from the message I heard that evening. At that time for about a span of one year, even though I was born again, I was scaring people away from wanting to become a Christian rather than leading people to the Lord.

As I prayed, read, studied and applied His Word into my life, my message to the non-believer changed into a message of love and compassion.

The Lord showed me and continues to show me that grace should be applied when dealing with a non-believer (as I once was), and to let Him do the rest.

God says that His Word will never return to Him void so whatever we speak to someone in love and compassion, based on God’s Word, He will use it in some way or another in that person’s life. It could be at that moment, a day later, a month later or twenty years later. Just remember that God will do the work.

Ok, so all that to simply say: when sharing be loving and compassionate, and if you (as I’ve done in the past) begin to get carried away, recall where you once were, and the love and compassion that was shown to you.

God bless y’all,

-Rubén
