Leaving a Legacy

Leaving a Legacy

"And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David"... "he [King David] walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You"

As I read and study through first Kings, I am in awe at how the Lord conjoins both Old and New testaments to bring forth His message of encouragement and guidance to His children.

Both provide us with excellent instruction on how we ought to be and act; what to stay away from and what to focus on. Both intertwine perfectly and neither takes precedence over the other but instead compliment on another.

In chapter three of first kings, the new King of Israel, Solomon, King David's son, is described as one who "loved the Lord" and walked in the "statutes" of his father. And, King Solomon's father is described as one who walked in truth, righteousness and uprightness of heart with God.

It's amazing to read this description of King David because he did some very foolish things during his lifetime. But, I'm convinced that King David's walk with the Lord was far more a righteous walk than a foolish walk with Him.

We do not know every detail of King David's life, how he raised his son, etc., but we do know that he left a legacy for his son Solomon to follow. This is because King David did not give up on following the ways of the Lord. He pushed on despite his failings and thus set an excellent example for his son.

As Christians, we need to follow this example of not giving up so that we can leave the legacy of Christ to our children.

We need to teach them the Word of God; We need to apply and live the Word of God; And, when we fall, we need to get back up, repent with a true heart, and continue where we left off. Be that example and leave a legacy that your children will always remember.

May the Lord provide us with strength and guidance to be a replica of Him today, Amen.
