Wife Submit, But What About The Husband?

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord." [1] Now a days, I'm sure this statement is considered extremely radical by those who don't believe and even by some who believe in Jesus.

Although I love the non-believer and hope and pray that all would come to know Jesus, I am not to concerned about what they think in regards to this Biblical statement.

The non-believer wouldn't spiritually understand as the Bible says "the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing" [2].

My concern is for the brethren; my fellow brothers who have come to know the Lord and have professed to follow Him.

Believe it or not, many brothers-in-Christ take the "Wives, submit to your own husbands" passage and twist it around to take advantage of the wife. Abuse, both physical and mental can come from twisting this passage around.

I believe this happens because the believer is not praying, reading and studying his Bible. He may have acknowledged Jesus at one time, but no action came from it [3].

So what should we do to avoid twisting this scripture around?

First thing is to pray and then read the entire passage in context. Read the before and after passages so you can obtain a better understanding of what the writer is conveying. And, daily read the Bible so you can eventually read it in its entirety.

The "Wives, submit to your own husbands" passage comes from Ephesians 5:22, but did you know that 1 Peter 3:1-12 expounds on this? Many don't know this (because they are not reading their Bible).

1 Peter 3:7 says "Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered."

Let's take some key words and define:
  • Husbands any married man
  • Likewise means equally, in the same way
  • Understanding denotes knowledge of spiritual truth
  • Honor means high respect, esteem
  • Together means combined action
Further, in Ephesians 5:25 the word of God tells husbands to love their wife "just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her".

How did Christ give Himself for the church? Because of His great love for us (the Church), He laid down His life for us [4]. Yes, He paid the ultimate sacrifice that we may have opportunity to live eternally. He went to the cross.

Now take what we've learned above and the "Wives, submit to your own husbands" passage and put it in context. Does the Bible say to treat your wife as a slave? Does it say to take advantage of her? Abuse her? or whatever else because she is to submit to the husband? I don't think so.

As a husband, are you loving your wife as Christ loved the church, sacrificing all so that she may live a blessed life?

Think about it brothers and don't take my word for it; please pray and read your Bible. Ask the Lord to speak to you regarding this.

Share this with someone you might know who is taking the "Wives, submit to your own husbands, scripture out of context.

If you have other passages that would encourage the brethren, submit them.

Stay Strong and Be Encouraged,

-Rubén
