What Does It Mean To Become "Born Again"

Sunrise at Camp Pendleton, CA

Have you ever heard anyone talk about becoming born again? Have you ever wondered what it means to become born again?

In the book of John (chapter 3 specifically), a story is told of a man by the name of Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews1.

This man came to Jesus one night and commented to Him that he and others knew He was a teacher whom God had sent. They knew this because they had seen what Jesus had been doing amongst them and no other could do those things unless they were sent from God2.

Nicodemus knew in his heart that Jesus had been sent from God and wanted to know more about Him. Have you ever wondered the same?

After Nicodemus stated his comment, Jesus straightway told him,

"unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God3."

(Jesus did not offer any explanations nor long stories, but instead went right to the point.)

After Jesus said this, Nicodemus asked Jesus a valid question,

"How can a man be born when he is old. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born4?"

Note: In case you are wondering, it is ok to ask God any question. Simply ask with a sincere heart and He will answer you.

Jesus then answers,

"unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again5.'"

Jesus made it clear to Nicodemus that a person can not see nor enter the kingdom of God unless he or she is born again.

The word born means to be regenerated. It is a metaphor which implies "of God making men his sons through faith in Christ's work6."

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary uses the biological verb regenerate meaning "biology : to grow again after being lost, damaged, etc. : to give new life to (something)." (Notice it says after being lost.)

The first birth is as Jesus said to Nicodemus "of the flesh." The second birth is of the Spirit which is the connection that is finally made between the spirit of the man who has been born again and the Holy Spirit.7

After you have accepted God as your Lord and Saviour through Jesus Christ, then the Holy Spirit comes in to live in you. This is when your new life begins.

Who has been given this opportunity to become born again? Every single living human being on this planet from the worst of the worst to the humble of humblest.

Why? Because in John 3:16 it says

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." -John 3:16 NLTse
