Colossians 3:2-3 Keep Your Focus on Jesus

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God"

In Colossians 3:1, we read that we are to be raised with Christ by seeking those things which are above. Above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God.

Here in verse two we read…

“Set your mind on things above” Set means to put or bring your mind into a specified state which is to establish or focus your mind on Jesus. As a side note, I looked up the word “specified” and the meaning states to identify clearly and definitely. So our minds should be clearly focused on Jesus. Nothing in life should hinder this focus we are to have in Him.

So how do we set our minds on the things above? We pray (or converse with God). We read the Bible. And we apply it into our lives without compromise. We stay away from things that would make us lose our focus on Him e.g. drugs, bad habits, etc..

The second part of the verse says…

“Not on things on the earth” This doesn’t mean you can’t associate with people, buy a car, go to Disneyland, get married and so on. This means not to make the earthly things a first priority. Your first priority is to set your mind on things above. If you are focused on everything else but Jesus, then your mind is set on the things on this earth. Placing the things of the earth as first priority hinders our focus on Jesus.

In verse three it says…

“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” When we became born again, we died to the things of this earth and our life is now covered or concealed with Christ in God. That’s a promise which can’t be broken. Yes, we will still encounter the issues of life on earth, but as we’ve been encouraged earlier in the passage, we continue to set our minds on things above and not on this earth because the earth will pass away one day.

So how do you apply all of this into your life? Set your mind on Jesus, go on with your daily activities, then everything else will just flow the way it should. If it doesn’t flow as planned for some reason or another (the Lord knows why) then you will have peace, still, because your mind is set on Jesus.

May the Lord God Almighty bless you this day! Stay Strong!
