Colossians 3:6-7 Son's of Disobedience

Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. Colossians 3:6-7

Today we will be looking at verses six and seven. These two verses provide information on the “wrath of God”, the “sons of disobedience” and a little something about the Christian.

Verse six and seven are connected to verse five. Or, better yet, we can say verse six is in conjunction with verse five and feeds through to verse seven. This is because of the word because. Because is the connector.

The word because can also be read as ‘by reason of this’. It tells us that by reason of the things we read in verse five, fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry, the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.

“Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience” (v6)
So what is the wrath of God? It is God’s anger towards those things that He is against. Yes, God, our Father, is against all things bad. Yes, He is angered, and those who commit these things will one day be judged by Him. In addition to this, God also calls for the Christian to hate evil. Yes, this is one time He calls us to hate something [1].

Let me clarify a couple of things here because many questions begin to arise due to this.

First, God is not angry at people, and He is not out to destroy everyone despite what many people who don’t know Him or who don’t read their Bible think. On the contrary, He loves every single person in this world. That’s why He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die for us that we may have opportunity to live [2]. His anger is toward the things which mankind brings forth that, in turn, hurts other men and women and goes totally against His good will [3].

In light of the recent Boston terrorist acts by two men at the Boston marathon, many people on Google plus are asking the question ‘why would your God allow this to happen if He loves everyone?’ This is in response to people who are posting comments like ‘I will pray to God for the survivors’ or ‘may God bless the families of the victims’ and so on.

Verse six answers that question. It is man alone, those who have made the decision to be apart from God i.e. the sons of disobedience who cause these tragedies [4].

God does not cause bad people to create tragedy. God didn’t make robots. God completely turns every single one of us over to our own free will so that we can make the choice: will we serve Him or the devil? [5]

And, guess what? God’s mercy and grace allows even these sons of disobedience to repent from their foolishness, and turn to Him and become born again [6]. Of course they will still suffer the consequences for what they did, but they will go through them with Christ living in them.

Pretty crazy, but it’s true, and I’m thankful for His mercy and grace because I was once a son of disobedience. (No, not a terrorist.) Before Christ, I did everything that was against Him knowingly and unknowingly. Yes, I was totally lost until He saved me [7].

“in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them” (v7)
Verse seven talks about the Christian who has been born again. Like I mentioned just above, I was once a son of disobedience. In addition, anyone who has come to know the Lord as saviour once walked in disobedience to Him. What was that disobedience? Verse five tells us what that was: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Bros and sis’ in-Christ we need to take this passage to heart. If you are one whom the Lord has called to be an evangelist or one who goes out and shares the Good News of Jesus unto salvation with people, you need to remember where you came from. Don’t try to be judge. Only God is judge [8].

I’ll be straight forward… don’t let your first words be ‘repent or you will go to hell’ even though it’s true (we know it’s true). But instead, let your words come forth to them with kindness, sharing the good and bad with love pouring out toward them.

Yes, the person might be committing adultery, an excessive liar, into pornagraphy and the list goes on, but we are to share God’s message of salvation in a loving manner. Also, we don’t need to try to convert them. The Holy Spirit will take care of that. All we need to do is put out the seed, and the Holy Spirit will spring it forth in due time [9]. Remember where you came from. Remember where you once walked.

I hope this is encouraging to you. Stay Strong and keeping moving forward toward Christ!
